In June 2009, myself and my father, along with 5 others formed a team in B.C.’s inaugural Ride to Conquer Cancer. It consisted of a 2 day bike ride of over 250km from Vancouver to Seattle.
The others on our team of course had their own personal reasons for participating, but my father and I became involved as a result of Maddy, my daughter being diagnosed with cancer. I can’t tell you how scary that was!!! But I’m happy to report, that after an operation and radiation treatment, she is doing great. Maddy’s grandmother, Lola is a cancer survivor, and my grandfather passed away from cancer.
Our family is no different, in that this disease affects all of us in one way or another. So we decided to commit to the ride, to offer support, as well as to do our part in trying to make a difference!!
During the process of canvassing friends, relatives, acquaintances, etc., for donations, I heard many stories of inspiration, and unfortunately many tragic ones as well. This year I want to be able to “give back” to those who contributed to my ride, and am going to be asking each donor if I could ride for someone on their behalf. I will be taking a list with the names of these people with me on the ride, and it will provide me with inspiration when the experience became challenging.
As a team, we raised in excess of $18,000, for which are proud. As a group of 1701 riders, we raised $6.9 Million. Truly amazing,…and all made possible by your contributions. So Thank You!, from the bottom of my heart!
That was then,…..but this is now. I realized that the job is not over. There is still much work to do, and this is my way of trying to beat this horrible disease! I’m asking you to play your part by contributing to myself, or at least someone else in this event! A cure can be found. I quote the leader of the Team Finn, as saying “This isn’t only the ride to conquer cancer, this is the ride to end this ride!!”. So let’s hope that we won’t need to be doing this in the not too distant future. But we need your help!!
Contribute to this history-making event with a donation. Funds raised in The Ride to Conquer Cancer will support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care made possible through BC Cancer Foundation, a leader in cancer research and care.
When you make your donation, you can place the name of the person or persons in the recognition or message area so that I can to add it to the list
