Road to the Pro’s w/ Micah Brakefield #25 – The time has come

Posted on 07 November 2012

Well, here we are. I started writing this series on may 23rd 2011. In the last 18 months, I have spent countless hours learning what it takes to become a professional fighter. I started off a wrestler, with zero knowledge of jiu-jitsu or striking, but I believed I I had what it took mentally to [...]

Road to the Pro’s w/ Micah Brakefield #24 – 23 days to go

Posted on 17 October 2012

It’s funny, I’ve known about this fight for a while now, but last week in Victoria it became real. I was sitting out on a sun deck with my brother and a few friends, when somebody asked how preparation for the fight was coming. I answered with the usual, “it’s going good.” But all of the sudden my [...]

Road to the Pro’s w/ Micah Brakefield #23 – First day of my MMA career

Posted on 02 October 2012

Today is the first day of my MMA career. For the past 2 years I have been training non-chalantly and hoping for the best. While in most cases, “the best” ended up happening; with me winning all of my fights in the middleweight division I knew that my luck would soon run out. So, two weeks ago I quit my job at Tippet Richardson where I was working full time, making OK money and had benefits, in order to start a part time position at the Richmond Sports Club that will allow me to train with Kalib Starnes twice-a-day, every day.

Road to the Pro’s w/ Micah Brakefield #22 – I’ll see Stephan Fritsche on November 9th

Posted on 04 September 2012

So it’s official, November 9th I will be fighting Stephan Fritsche. He is 5-2-1 as a Pro MMA fighter and has a Pro title in some other promotion. It feels like it’s forever away, but I know the time will race by and before I know it I will be waiting backstage for “Garden Grove” [...]

Road to the Pro’s w/ Micah Brakefield #21 – Signed first Pro Deal

Posted on 06 August 2012

My whole life, the only thing that I have truly desired, is to become a professional athlete. For a good portion of my childhood I had my eyes set on being a professional football player, but any chance of that happening ended when I shattered my leg in grade 11 playing rugby for my high school team. The [...]

Road to the Pro’s w/ Micah Brakefield #20 – Decision Time

Posted on 25 June 2012

Decisions, decisions…. My knee is getting better each day and I am able to push it further and further. I am not yet able to wrestle or kick box, but I am able to roll at close to 100%.

Road to the Pro’s w/ Micah Brakefield #19: Aching to return

Posted on 31 May 2012

It has been 6 weeks since I hurt my knee and when the doctor told me I was going to be out for 6-8 weeks, naturally I assumed I would be back training in under 3. Unfortunately that was not the case. I have been forced to sit and watch 3 Battlefield Fight League cards in a row without [...]

Road to the Pro’s w/ Micah Brakefield #18: How is the knee holding up?

Posted on 14 May 2012

I’m still a few weeks away from being able to get back in to the gym, and it’s killing me. I walk around dodging imaginary punches and catching kicks that don’t exists (I know, usually I catch the punch with my chin and start grappling, but it’s always nice to pretend).  During conversations I feel my mind constantly trying to [...]

Road to the Pro’s: Micah Brakefield #17 – Many sacrifices

Posted on 02 May 2012

The life of an aspiring young athlete is one of many sacrifices. We sacrifice our time, energy and health for our sports. MMA is viewed by many as a sport for tattooed  thugs and gangsters, but today I read a comment by one of our local MMA referees John Cooper that I think describes the [...]

Road to the Pro’s: Micah Brakefield #16 – Time to Prepare

Posted on 17 April 2012

I just got back from watching the newly dubbed Aggression Fighting Championships in Victoria, BC. It was a great show that ran smoothly and had some really great fights. They have some very good fighters and with the new merger will be putting on fights close to every month. It’s no secret that I would like to [...]
