Former middleweight champions collide at UFC 148

|

Cung Le vs. Rich Franklin was a heavily discussed inter-promotional battle several years ago when Franklin had recently lost his UFC title to Anderson Silva and Le was blistering the competition with body-blows in Strikeforce, winning their middleweight title.

It may have come a little later than we had hoped for but this clash of former middleweight champions will take place on July 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In their late-thirties Le and Franklin find themselves in similar positions having both suffered several defeats in their last outings and most pinning them as over the hill.

Le made his UFC debut last November losing a highly-competitive fight of the night winning battle with former Pride middleweight kingpin and pound-for-pound star Wanderlei Silva that impressed fans, pundits and media insiders alike.

Now seeking his first octagon victory he has a tough challenge in Franklin — The former school teacher makes his return to middleweight for the first time since 2007 after losing three of his last five outings between 195 and 205-pounds.

These two midleweight stars will serve as a featured bout for the UFC 148 event that will be headlined by The Ultimate Fighter coaches Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber battling for the UFC bantamweight title.
