Renan Barao expected to defend interim title, likely against Michael McDonald

|

The UFC has given out a number of interim titles over the past few years, however they have been unified sooner rather than later.

Most recently, Carlos Condit waited until the champ Georges St-Pierre was able to return to action before stepping inside the Octagon. Many fans were disappointed by this decision.

The UFC was initially going to let interim UFC Bantamweight Champion Renan Barao wait until Dominick Cruz returned from his knee injury. However,  during the UFC 154 post-fight media scrum UFC President Dana White said that Barao will likely have to defend the strap before Cruz’ return.

“We were talking about Barão defending his title now, so whether he wants to wait or not, we’re going to go back to him soon here and have him defend it.”

White mentioned that the likely candidate to fight Barao would be Michael “Mayday” McDonald.

McDonald (15-1) is currently on an eight five winning streak, with his most recent victory coming over former WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres.
