Marcus Brimage TUF 14 Video Blog: Episode 5

Tags: , , , , ,

MMASucka’s resident TUF 14 video blogger, Marcus Brimage discusses the ongoing mishaps that happen during this season. This was probably the most exciting episode of the season with Diego telling people he is going to cut their heads off to the cowboy hat incident at the house. Marcus discusses all of that, along with the fight between Akira Corassani and Dustin Neace which gave Team Bisping their first victory.

The T.U.F. Morning After: Season 14, Episode 1

Tags: , ,

Welcome to the TUF Morning After! Here are my fan boy reactions to the most recent TUF episodes the morning after they air, so if you haven’t seen the latest episode this might not make sense to you, and I’m guaranteeing that there will be SPOILERS!  If you are looking for a full recap, or the actual episode check out The Ultimate Fighter website.  They maintain their site very well since last season committing to have all the episodes available on streaming video.

I’ve been anxiously waiting for this season of The Ultimate Fighter to premier since I found out that it would feature the bantamweights and the featherweights.  After thirteen seasons of farming the best out of the other five weight classes, it’s going to be exciting to see the top prospects of the two lightest weight classes have their chance on the show.  On top of that, having two of MMA’s most polarizing characters like Michael Bisping and Jason “Mayhem” Miller as your coaches, you don’t even need to see the season trailer to know that they will have altercations outside of the octagon during filming.  On top of that, Dana put more money on the table with a fan voted best KO, Submission, and Fight of the season awards which each winner gets $25,000 a piece. I love it when Dana throws money around to get fighters to do their job!

On to the fights…

Even though they only with a two hours to squeeze in Dana’s “Do you wanna be a F**king Fighter” speech, 16 fights and fighter introductions, the Spike editing guys did an awesome job keeping the best full fights, and rushing through the longer drawn out ones.  By the end of the 16 elimination fights there were  eight knockouts, five submissions, three decisions. Of the three decisions there was only one wrestling lay and pray.  Not bad for a card that seemed to be full of fighters coming from a strong wrestling background.

My favorite fight highlights:

- the second fight of the night, we had Diego Brandao show his best Dan Henderson impression when he threw an H-bomb that floored his opponent, Jesse Newell, and followed up for good measure with a diving KO forearm.  I’m sure Bisping felt that one, and Meyhem was sure to point it out!

- Louis Gaudinot, a curly green haired bantam weight out of fighting out of Yonkers, NY,  threw a sweet reverse elbow while driving his opponent, Paul McVeigh, to the fence and attempting a take down.  The elbow rocked McVeigh and eventually lead to a 3rd round stoppage in favor of Gaudinot.

-TJ Dillshaw is truly an Alpha Male product. His stance, footwork, fakes and all around fighting style mirrors Urijah Faber almost exactly.  His ground and pound finish would make his team proud.

- Bryson Wailehua-Hansen, The Hawaiian with the Chin, was almost unreal.  He has Mark Hunt’s Chin at featherweight.  He took so many power punches to the head from Marcus Brimage that each would have KO’d a normal human being, and still kept on swinging and clipping Brimage. Eventually the fight was stopped, and Bryson lost, but he was still on his feet after taking all the abuse. I hope Bryson is high up on the reserve list because I really enjoyed watching him fight.

I think the other interesting part of the season will be the coaches and coaching staff.  Bisping’s coaching staff consists of Tiki Ghosn and MMA striking specialists Rob McCullough.  Tiki and Mayhem are very familiar with each other as both were part of the early team Punishment with Tito Ortiz and Rampage Jackson.  Also, they were often seen hanging out together on the Triumph United youtube videos in the past.  I have a feeling that most of the animosity between coaches will stay only between Bisping and Mayhem and hopefully the rest of the coaching staff keeps it professional, but then again, controversy make ratings!

For Mayhem, we have Ryan Parsons.  I have a feeling that he will also bring in some of the coaches from the Reign training center including Mark Munoz, where Mayhem is currently training from.

Mayhem Miller: I Am The Most Proud Of This Season

Tags: , , , ,

When you think of Jason “Mayhem” Miller, a lot of people think of the situation in Nashville in April of 2010. Perception should change this season as Miller along with Michael Bisping are the coaches for Season 14 of the Ultimate Fighter, which starts tonight with a two hour premeire at 9ET/8CT on Spike TV.

Miller was supposed to fight Aaron Simpson at UFC 132 in July and then lobbied to coach on the upcoming season as Chael Sonnen was supposed be one of the coaches, but could not get cleared due to suspension.

“Hell, I asked for it,”Miller told us. “I had tweeted to Dana White that I’ll do it. I knew Chael was going to have problems and he did, so I said I’ll do it. The power of Twitter and I magically got called up.”

A lot of fans haven’t been fans of Bisping for one reason or another, but Miller was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. That however, lasted only a short amount of time.

“You know man, I didn’t even know his past,” said Miller. “I went in with a clear head, I didn’t watch the show (with Bisping), so I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t know what Michael Bisping was like really. We have mutual friends, so they say he’s not a bad guy. Well man, he proved them wrong on the show. I can’t wait to smash his face in on December 3rd. Its gunna be awesome.”

How long did it take Mayhem to not like Bisping?

“Oh man, like pretty much like a day or two,” said Miller. I didn’t talk to him for that first day and I still didn’t like him. Man, he just has an arrogant heir that he only cares about himself and it comes through. Just watch the damn show, your gunna hate him more than you already did.”

UFC President Dana White has made statements recently saying the fights coming up tonight are the best ever and Miller backs up his bosses claims.

“They are, I was shocked,” said Miller. “I was like, How the hell, every fight is good to get into the house. Every fight was exciting, every fight had a little dramatic art to it. I was like, this is crazy. You got to see some really talented dudes go out and fight. It was amazing.”

You hear a lot of fighters say after they compete on the show, that they take something from the coaches. Miller thinks he was able to impact them in the six weeks of taping.

“All the guys coming in already knew how to fight,” said Miller. “They needed gameplanning and that kind of thing. That’s what we really focused on and in addition we focused on some rules and some specific techiques that we would use in the cage. I feel like I did a good job. I did the best job I could of shaping these guys games around and what they needed to do in the fight. I am really proud. In my whole life, I am the most proud of this season of The Ultimate Fighter because I really worked my ass off to make sure that I gave everything to the guys and held nothing back.”

In retrospect, did his view on Bisping change when the show concluded?

‘The same one I did, the first or second day of being there,” said Miller. “It was like man, what an arrogant prick and I can’t wait to beat him up.”

The Ultimate Fighter 14 ‘Team Bisping vs. Team Miller’ Conference Call Highlights

Tags: , , ,

Today the UFC held a telephone conference call for The Ultimate Fighter 14 with both coaches, Michael Bisping and Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller. The two bantered back and forth with eachother and made this conference call one of the most memorable in a long time.

Below are highlights from the call.

Jason Miller

- I didn’t like him at first, then I liked him. Now I’m back to hating him again.

- I definitely got under his skin…apart from the unbelievable fights…our personality clash put on a damn good show…

- I think you’re way worse an idiot than I am…

- My first priority was to give full attention to coaching these guys and second to make entertaining television…

- Bisping fully proved himself to be a prick by week 2

- It wasn’t the normal crop of TUF crowd who were 2-0…some of these guys had 30 fighters…we didn’t have one lackluster fight the entire season…

- There were some upsets that some of the media have heard of, but guess what? They’re not coming into the house.

- It comes down to what’s best for my career, me vs. Bisping is going to be way better for the UFC. This is going to be huge for the TUF franchise. Just looking as a TV viewer, I’m totally enthralled with it.

- They just stuck the camera on us and we made good TV. I contributed to Lesnar’s season of TUF not having any ratings, I didn’t watch.

- I put 100% of my effort into this job.

- The amount of time stuck with a camera in your face and a microphone up your ass…I was used to television being a more controlled thing.

- A lot of his coaching staff are guys I used to train with and had to move on because they couldn’t give me what I needed.

Michael Bisping

- Jason, you have 15 different personalities. You either love or hate him. I definitely hate him…December 3rd I’m going to kick his ass, so it’s all good.

- This season is all real fighters. They weren’t there for air time…it was a good season, my team did a good job and I feel I represented myself pretty well.

- After a day the team gels, they open up to one another…many fighters told me how shocked they were that I did care about the team…it’s not about me or Jason…it’s about giving these guys a shot at the big time…

- Miller’s annoying for a completely different reason (than Jorge Rivera)…it wasn’t just Rivera, it was him and his entire team…they crossed the line talking to family…Jason’s not like that, he’s just idiotic…his mouth is definitely bigger than his brain…

- Nice to see you’ve warmed up on your sister, Jason.

- I always give people the benefit of the doubt…we have a few mutual friends…the first couple of days before shooting starts and the more time I spent around him the more he irritated me…you’ll see why he isn’t on my Christmas card list..

- Coaching lighter weight guys is a double edged sword…the downside is when I’m coaching you saw in season 9 I’m on the mat, but with the size difference this time I couldn’t do that…had to do a lot of coaching from the sidelines…

- You didn’t have to show these fighters too many things…these were complete fighters, they just needed guidance and structure.

- There was never any hesitation in accepting the role as coach…in my opinion, that role is very prestigious…the reality is there is a downside: it means 10 months out of the game, it means taking a fight against Jason Miller.

- Anderson Silva hasn’t wiped out the middleweight division yet; I match up well with him and better than some of these other fighters have.

- This season I was myself, I didn’t pull any punches, I didn’t go on a PR campaign to get more fans.

- Jason’s already beaten mentally. It’ll be my job to show up to the fight and collect a paycheck.

- As of right now I’m living in California. The plan for the training camp is to spend a month in California and then somewhere else yet to be determined…I’m still very much part of the Wolfslair.

Chael Sonnen Is The Only Option at 185 For Anderson Silva

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Anderson Silva on Saturday further established his claim as pound for pound the best fighter in the world today quite arguably the best ever with his win over Yushin Okami at UFC 134. It was Silva’s 15th overall and 14th in the UFC. When a guy is that dominant in his weight class and disposing of all challengers in his path, the next path would be for a guy to move up in weight and fight guys at that weight class to further cement his legacy in the sport.

UFC President Dana White said after the event on Saturday that Silva still has a few more challengers at 185 and that even includes a superfight with reigning UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St.Pierre. It begs the question: What challengers is White referring too? Mark Munoz? Not seasoned enough and doesn’t have the standup to matchup with Silva. Michael Bisping? Always underachieves in big time fights (Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans come to mind). Dan Henderson? (Lost to Silva via 2 round submission a few years back and at age 41 would be a diffcult weight cut back to 185 like his fight with Jake Shields). What about GSP?

If GSP had the frame to be close in weight to Silva, then the fight would make sense. Silva has fought two times at 205 and has even been rumored in the last year to want to have a heavyweight fight and GSP does not have the standup to even hang with Silva. The fight would be a total mismatch but that is another conversation for another time. So, who is the only opponent for Silva?

That guy would be none other than Chael Sonnen. They fought at UFC 117 and Silva pulled off the victory after getting dominated in the first four rounds by Sonnen, Silva pulled off a submission victory with a triangle armbar with 1:50 left in the fight. The rematch was supposed to happen early this year but Sonnen got suspended by the California State Athletic Commission for testing positive for elevated testosterone levels and the fight got scrapped. Silva defeated Vitor Belfort at UFC 126 and Okami this past Saturday. So why Sonnen?

Sonnen is the only option due to the fact that he gave Silva his toughest test during this run and his wrestling is superior to anyone at 185 and his standup is good enough to where he can just strike enough to keep Silva guessing. But the most important thing is that the fight will get a great buyrate on PPV and the UFC is a PPV business. They both are at the top of the weight class and with Sonnen’s trash talking and the legendary status that Silva has, this is the only logical fight that makes sense for Anderson Silva before what will be an eventual move up to 205. If Sonnen gets by Brian Stann at UFC 136 in October then lets make it happen.

Does that make the most sense or should Silva fight the guys mention in the beginning?

TUF 14 Coach “Mayhem” Miller Arrested For Allegedly Headlocking Sister

Tags: , , , , ,

It was reported today by TMZ that Jason “Mayhem” Miller was arrested last week after he allegedly put his sister in a headlock and refused to let her go.

According to law enforcement the two were at a house party in North California and Miller’s sister wanted to leave, but he wanted no part of that. TMZ says that his sister was able to escape the headlock which was when she notified the Chatham County Sheriff who arrested “Mayhem” later that evening for simple assault and false imprisonment. He posted bail and has since been released.

Hopefully “Mayhem” doesn’t decide to try this headlock maneuver on Michael Bisping in their match at The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale in December. Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Michael Bisping are the coaches on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter. The show debuts on September 21, 2011 and  according to UFC President Dana White this season is “really good — really good.”
