By Justin Faux

Last night amidst one of the busiest weekend’s combat sports has seen all year Brock Lesnar is the hot topic of discussion.

It was billed as the biggest heavyweight fight in UFC history when the NCAA Division I champion met the K-1 kickboxing champion in a throw-back to the early days of the promotions history with a traditional striker vs. grappler showdown.

There were millions of questions circling both men and it didn’t take long for them to be answered – Despite suffering a cut early above his eye “The Demolition Man” relentlessly stalked Lesnar who only reverted back to his bread-n-butter wrestling game on one occasion with a takedown attempt that was easily stuffed.

As we were about to reach the half-way point of the first of five potential rounds Overeem connected with three shots to the liver with the final one dropping Lesnar who was swarmed on with strikes.

The former WWE Champion announced his intentions to walk-away from the sport in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.

“I’ve had a really difficult couple years with my disease,” Lesnar said after the fight. “And I’m officially going to say this is the last time you’ll see me in the octagon.”

Brock added that he had promised his wife, Sable of WWE stardom and his child that if he won this fight he would get a title shot and that would be his last fight. But if he lost, as he did, he would retire.

It’s been a busy few years for the Webster, South Dakoda native beginning his career in 2007 Lesnar did in eight professional bouts more than what most could do in eighty.

In 2008 with only one octagon victory under his belt Lesnar dominated two-division champion and first ballot Hall-of-Famer Randy Couture en route to winning his first UFC title which he would go on to defend twice.

In 2009 he had his first flare with the severe intestinal aliment diverticulitis during a hunting trip in Canada and after spending 11 days in hospital the imposing giant had lost 40 pounds and was recommended to have surgery to remove his colon.

This year he would once again be troubled by diverticulitis which would force him to cancel his UFC 131 bout with rival coach Junior Dos Santos on the thirteenth season of Spike TV’s hit reality series The Ultimate Fighter.

Now with a 5-3 professional record and for the first time in his career suffering back-to-back defeats Lesnar hangs up his gloves.

Literally seconds later the key-words “Brock Lesnar” and “WWE” were trending worldwide so you can guess what people were talking about.

Following winning the NCAA Division I Championship for the University of Minnesota he chose a career in professional wrestling over going to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia for one simple reason – Money.

Over his four-year career with the WWE he made plenty of it taking the wrestling word by storm and achieving almost everything that there was to do.

Conspiracy theorists have been hard at work since last night proceedings with wet dreams about Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania 28.

Will the former champ return home to the WWE after nearly an eight-year hiatus? Yes, but not right now.

Firstly, Lesnar will not return to the WWE on a full-time schedule unless it was for the most ridiculous amounts of cash. Lesnar speaks in his autobiography about the toll that a 300+ day schedule in the WWE can take on your body which forced him to an addiction to Vicodin and Vodka and at 34-years-of-age I don’t know if that’s something he really wants to do again. Secondly, returning in time for WrestleMania in April of 2012 wouldn’t make as much of an impact as it would have in years prior because the Main Event for this year’s super-show is The Rock vs. John Cena. I would be shocked if Brock Lesnar never made a big return to the WWE for a few big-time paydays at their big events.

Brock Lesnar has tried his hand at a lot of things in life between MMA, a try-out with the Minnesota Vikings that came up empty and an amateur wrestling career but he found the most success being a part of the WWE roster.

- Jon Koppenhaver who is now known as War Machine defeated Roger Huerta in the main event of Ultimate Warrior Fighting 1 in Pharr, Texas. War Machine who is making his return to the cage following a one year stint at the George Bailey Detention Facility after being convicted of felony assault, defeated Huerta by TKO late in the third round.

Lmao! Guess I cant do shit right. Im not going anywhere bitches so get use to my face. Gonna keep rackin up W’s just to spite you all. – via War Machine’s Twitter

- Live on the Jersey strip at Caesars Atlantic City, Bellator 59 went down. It was one hell of a card, which featured the Bantamweight and Heavyweight Tournament finals. The first tournament bout was the bantamweight matchup where Eduardo Dantas defeated Alexis Vila by Unanimous Decision to earn the right to fight the current champ Zach Makovsky. Unfortunately the main event of the evening was ruled a no contest after Thiago Santos hit Eric Prindle with an accidental groin strike in round 1. The highlight of the night, well maybe not such a highlight, but following Kurt Pellegrino’s loss at the hands of Patricky Pitbull he announced his retirement to his hometown crowd.

This isn’t the way I wanted it to end. You know, walking up the stairs I wanted to honestly tell you that you guys would never ever ever see me fight again unless you’re watching old tapes. It’s just getting a little hard. I missed my daughter’s first words, which were ‘dad,’ preparing for this fight. I don’t know what I want to do, but as of right now I’m done. I think I’m done… I don’t know what to do. I wanted to retire today.

- In the main event of Saturday’s KSW 17 event in Poland, Polish strongman Mariusz Pudzianowski defeated James Thompson by Unanimous Decision victory. The decision was highly controversial Thompson clearly won the first round, so it should have gone to an overtime round. Check the video below to see how upset Thompson was…

- Finally at Rumble of the Kings 2011, Marius Zaromskis used a highlight-reel somersault head kick to knock Bruno Carvalho to the mat where he finished him with some serious ground and pound.

Weight-cutting is becoming more and more of an issue in combat sports. The process, common among mixed martial artists, boxers and amateur wrestlers involves sucking as much as twenty plus pounds of water out of the body before the weigh-in and then re-hydrating afterwards, ostensibly to give the combatant an advantage in size. Proponents of weight-cutting insist that if done properly there is no risk to the body’s health, while detractors point to cases of extreme dehydration and in some cases permanent damage.

Recently, UFC veteran Marcus Davis told MMAWeekly.com a story about a particular weight-cutting experience that raised a lot of eyebrows in the MMA community. In his first fight after leaving the UFC, Davis fought for Canada’s MFC at 155 pounds. Davis said the cut “nearly killed him”, leaving him unable to speak at the weigh-ins because his throat was so coarse from dehydration and also unable to use the bathroom for several days. His body reacted so badly to the cut that he will never attempt it again.

Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier lost his chance at Olympic gold due to a weight cut gone wrong. Cormier was the captain of the USA’s freestyle wrestling team and was a serious contender to bring home a medal in the Beijing Games but experienced kidney failure due to extreme dehydration during his cut to 211 pounds. Cormier will never again attempt to cut weight due to a very real chance that it could be lethal.

Rory Markham had his own hellish weight-cutting experience which he relayed to Sam Sheridan, who penned the book “A Fighter’s Heart”. Before Markham’s fight against Dan Hardy at UFC 95, his weight cut left his body cramping so badly that one of his lungs collapsed. Sheridan said “After the knock-out [loss], he got x-rayed, and the Doc said ‘Can I X-ray your chest, it looks weird?’ and Rory said sure, and they said ‘You have a collapsed lung.’”

But for all the stories of mixed martial artists suffering to cut weight, there are those that insist the ones who have trouble are the ones who do it incorrectly. Mike Dolce experienced limited success in MMA, best known for his stint in the IFL and an appearance on season 7 of The Ultimate Fighter. But as his fighting career stalled, be became one of the sport’s most well-known nutritionists and guru of weight-cutting. Dolce’s success stories include Thiago Alves, who prior to his work with Dolce was notorious for having difficulty making 170 pounds, and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

The work with Jackson prior to his fight with Rashad Evans is something Dolce is especially proud of. Dolce told MMAFighting.com “That was one where everybody – even guys on his team, his management – they wrote it off as being nearly impossible…but I was able to get him to lose forty-five pounds in eight weeks, step on the scale, feel great, then go out there and compete with Rashad [Evans] the entire time.”

Dolce, much like GSP’s trainer Firas Zahabi, decries the process of using the sauna for large weight cuts as doing more harm than good, particularly on a fighter’s mental state. “That’s when the mind games start. I know, I’ve cut thirty or forty pounds. I know what goes on behind the eyes during the weight cut process. I know how it feels to be locked in that sauna when you’re twelve pounds over and that single bead of sweat falls in slow motion. Then it hits the floor and you’re praying for the second bead of sweat to come. That is a painstaking process in a 180-degree room. Most people don’t get that or understand that.”

Indeed, the mental impact may be as severe as the physical impact. Yahoo Sports’ Maggie Hendricks shared a study done by researchers at Cal State Fullerton, which examined how weight cutting affected collegiate wrestlers. “The researchers found that wrestlers who lost 4 percent or more of their body mass had significantly higher levels of confusion on the day of the competition. There was no increased confusion for those who lost less than 4 percent of their body mass.” In a sport where impaired decision-making or confusion could lead to serious injury, is having a perceived slight weight advantage really worth the risk?

Holding the weigh-ins on the same day of the event has been suggested by some, with it’s supporters espousing the theory that fighters will attempt less severe cuts when they only have a couple of hours of recovery time before the fight. Boxing fans however still remember the story of Duk Koo Kim, who after a massive weight cut and same-day weigh-in, took a pounding over fourteen rounds from Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini. Without sufficient hydration, Kim’s brain slammed repeatedly against his skull and after the fight Kim collapsed into a coma from which he died four days later.

While fighters will typically use any advantage (perceived or otherwise) without regard to their safety, some athletic commissions are taking the lead. North Carolina and Massachusetts both have a double weigh-in rule, where fighters must make weight on the day before the event and weigh-in again on fight day. The second weigh-in can be no greater than 1.0625 times their previously recorded weight, which is an average of about ten pounds.

Mixed martial arts is by its nature a violent sport, it also prides itself on fighter safety. The sport has grown consistently in part because of the willingness to accept increased safety measures for the athletes involved, which once upon a time included the introduction of weight classes. Now it may be time to ask whether the sport is doing enough to protect fighters from themselves when it comes to dangerous weight cuts. Some will continue to argue that it’s merely part of the game, but would fans really notice if stricter weight controls were in place? I have yet to meet an MMA fan whose decision to buy a ticket or a pay-per-view is influenced one way or another by the amount of weight the participants have cut. The name on the marquee isn’t the “ultimate weight-cutting championship”.

If it prevents just one Davis, Cormier, or Markham incident then it may be time for athletic commissions to re-examine the process.

MMASucka columnist Geordie McCredie had the opportunity to chat with former TUF contestant and Jiu Jitsu all star Vinny Magalhães. In the interview he chats about his active guard game, the fact that he is up for submission of the year award and his opinion on the rubber guard in MMA.

I wanted to start out talking about the use of grappling and submissions in MMA, seeing as you’re one of the few guys who actively tries to end fights that way. A lot of guys, when they hit the ground in the bottom position, seem to do one of two things. They either try to get up immediately or try to stabilize their position. “Getting to guard” seems like a reasonable idea, but a closed, inactive guard seems to be the position they move to.

I notice that you have a very dynamic guard, very active, making it extremely difficult for your opponents to establish a strong base or strike you effectively, do you think this is the key to countering wrestle-fucking?

Definitely, it feel like most of the BJJ guys have the mentality that they have to take the fight to the ground, which most of the time means get the takedown, and work from the top, but then when things don’t go their way and they end up on their back, they end up doing nothing but stalling… In my opinion the only way that you will be able to beat a good wrestler and beat ‘the rules’ is if you are constantly looking for submission off your back. Most of the wrestlers nowadays don’t even respect the majority of the BJJ guys, because they know the majority of them won’t even try to work on a submission while they’re on their backs.

You’re in the running for Submission of the Year at the 2011 Fighter’s Only World MMA Awards (you can vote for Vinny to win, here: http://www.onlineawards.co.uk/fightersonly/home.asp) for your spectacular win via gogoplata over Victor Nemkov, but the special thing about that fight in my opinion wasn’t just landing the gogoplata, it was dominating the grappling throughout the fight. When you were on your back, it was Nemkov who was in immediate danger nearly the entire time.

However, not all fights end in a decisive victory, some go to decision. It seems that wrestling and “being on top” is favored by most judges in North America at this point. As opposed to just jockeying for position, you seem to be very intent on threatening submissions at every opportunity, do you think that sort of dominance should score more points on the judges score cards if the fight goes the distance?

Well, It really depends, there was a fight where Miguel Torres was being really acitve while fighting from the bottom (can’t remember who he went against though), he ended up losing that fight on the judges score. To be honest with you, even though I’m a BJJ guy i also thought that he had lost that fight. In my opinion there are two ways of being active your back: 1- when you’re “trying” to go for something, but don’t get anywhere close to get it; 2- When you actually lock a submission and put your opponent in danger of getting tapped. In that fight what happened was Miguel trying to do stuff, but at no point he was close to get the finish, that’s why I thought the result was fair. So anwering your question, yes, submission attempts should definitely count as a factor on the score system, BUT ONLY if the move is fully locked, only if the other fighter was in real danger of getting tapped.

That’s a good point, just “being active” shouldn’t win fights…the equivalent in standup is spending the round dancing instead of fighting, sure you’re doing something, but it’s not the thing that will end the fight.

There’s an obvious difference in judging between North America and Japan, but what about North America and Russia?

I haven’t really paid attention to the judges in Russia, maybe because M-1 has a high finish rates…who knows, but the only couple decisions that i’ve seen in Russia, I saw the Russian judges giving the win for the Russian fighters whenever they fought a foreigner…so far that’s all i know about the Russian judging system.

Ok, shifting the focus back to technique for a moment, you rarely seem to threaten just one submission or “put all your eggs in one basket” there always seem to be several ways you can go, how important is it to chain submissions together in order to land one of them?

In my opinion it’s really important… from what I see, many MMA fighters that don’t have BJJ as their background barely focus on submission attacks, they mostly work on submission defenses, and also most of the time they only work on defending one move at a time. So by using a chain of submission, I feel like I might have a guy defending my submissions once, twice, possibly three times, but eventually they will get caught with something unexpectedly, especially when I pull something unorthodox that they’re not so used to practice.

I think that’s a very important point. Even most casual fans understand that in order to land a knockout, it’s important to throw a combination of strikes, whereas it seems even some high level professional fighters lack the understanding that it’s essential to combine moves in grappling in order to land one of them. Forcing a submission on someone is like trying to throw only one punch and knock your opponent out right through his block.

Now, on to perhaps a slightly more contentious topic, you favor the use of the rubber guard. Many people criticize it (me being one of them in a rather obnoxious manner), but it obviously works for you and several others, do you think more people should use it?

I obviously like to use it, but it’s not what I use the most. I believe that what makes mine and other guys’ rubber guard so effective is the fact that all these other guys also have a solid BJJ/Grappling base. If I name a few, like George Sotiroupolos, Shinya Aoki, Matt Horwich, Myself, Demian Maia…you will agree that all these guys were already good grapplers before they were introduced to the 10th planet system, and by adding that system into their game, they just made themselves a little bit better…I don’t believe that people could only rely on rubber guard to win a fight on the ground, as I don’t believe that you could only rely on top game to win a fight on the ground. Even on the ground, you have to be well rounded.

That actually answers my follow-up question, my main criticism of the rubber guard is simply that basics are more important to focus on first, before adding high end advanced techniques.

In a general sense, what are some common mistakes you see guys making when the fight hits the ground and what would you suggest they do to overcome them?

As I said, lack of aggressiveness is a problem, I do feel like people should attempt more submission, if their skills allow them to do so. Another problem might be the fact that people are so worried about winning by the rules that once the fights are hitting the ground, people are either fighting for control, or for ground and pound, some guys aren’t being patient enough to work on submission, and I see that as a problem, after all not every punch will be a KO punch, and just work for control might not be always the best option especially when you end up going against somebody who has an aggressive guard.

If you had to name three guys who have influenced your technique that you have not trained with directly, who would they be?

I have actually trained with all the three guys that have influenced me the most: Demian Maia, Big Nog and Eric Paulson.

Mr. Paulson is one of the few guys in North America to have trained to a high level in both catch wrestling and BJJ, being a catch guy myself (for shame, for shame) I’ve always looked up to him. I think there are a few things for catch to offer, but no one should try and base their whole game off of catch.

If you could train with anyone, dead or alive, that you haven’t had the chance to train with, who would it be?

There’s nobody in special that I’d like to train with. I did train with/under some guys that a lot of people consider legends, such as Royler Gracie, Helio Gracie, Saulo Ribeiro in BJJ, Dan Henderson, Randy Couture, Big Nog, Wanderlei Silva, Vitor Belfot in MMA, so there’s nobody in special that I’d like to train with, since I have already trained with some of these guys.

That’s certainly an impressive list of instructors/training partners.

On a lighter note, do you actually wash laundry on those abs and what is your secret to being so ripped? I’m really hoping it’s a steroid I haven’t tried yet, because I refuse to do situps.

Well, I’m not as ripped as I used to be, but I guess those nice abs were results of wrong training. I used to put too much time into weight lifting and not that much into actual MMA training, and even though I was looking good phisically, I wasn’t looking so good while fighting… There was nothing specific that I was doing at that time to get those abs, other than a healthy diet and a lot of cardio and weight training. But then again, I kinda gave up on the abs, so I could become a better fighter… If that makes any sense… (laughs)

In fact, it really does. One of my former training partners shifted his conditioning exercises away from weightlifting and dramatically improved his performance.

If you had to grapple with Brock Lesnar for 5 mins, how many times would you tap him and what submissions would you use?

Well, he does have a lot of size on me, so it would be hard to predict how many time I’d submit him or even if I would submit him, but I’d definitely go after as many submissions as I could, and if we’re talking about full grappling, I think I’d eventually get him with something…

Size does matter, for sure, but my money would be on you in a grappling match, just saying.

What are your thoughts on Chael Sonnen?

Well, I really think he does that only to promote himself, nothing else. I did hear that he’s not a big fan of training BJJ, but he does grapple with BJJ guys, so no matter what he says, he does train BJJ, he might call it grappling, but it’s BJJ. As for him talking crap about BJJ and Brazilians, I just think it’s funny, I don’t take it as something offensive, but I think he should be careful sometimes with what he says, because brazilians have a different sense of humor, and sometimes they won’t take some of the stuff he says as a joke.

I guess I can say I’ve trained BJJ now, in that case…I mean, I’ve gone to open mats at BJJ schools and tapped a lot but I can’t say I ever learned any techniques (except brushing up on my tap reflex).

That’s also BJJ, at least you didn’t get your arms broken (laughs)

Thanks for your time, Vinny, I hope everyone remembers to vote for you for Submission of the Year.

UFC Officials announced this morning that welterweights Martin Kampmann and Rick Story would go toe to toe at UFC 139 on Nov. 19 in San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion.

This event is expected to be headlined by Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos for the heavyweight championship. Kampmann and Story are expected to be on the Spike TV “Prelims” broadcast.

Story is coming off of an upset loss to Charlie Brenneman at UFC on Versus 4 earlier this summer. Kampmann is in the same boat, also coming off of a loss. However both of Kampmann’s losses have been a tad bit controversial decision losses to Diego Sanchez and Jake Shields.
