UFC on Fuel TV 1 delivered with action in all shapes and forms whether it be back and forth bloodbaths like our main event saw or seesaw affairs and crushing submissions, it delivered a bit of everything.

The 170-pound main eventers collected the Fight of the Night for their fifteen minute battle that got everyone in Omaha, Nebraska on their feet.

Knockout of the Night was awarded to heavyweight slugger Stipe Miocic who made short work of Phil De Fries in 42 seconds giving him his second-straight octagon victory.

And finally Submission of the Night was awarded to bantamweight star Ivan Menjivar who fought off an early onslaught by The Ultimate Fighter veteran John Albert but was able to put him away before the round concluded with a rear-naked-choke.

UFC on Fuel TV 1: Skyscraper finishes Herman by TKO

Tags: , , , ,

The co-main event features two heavyweight behemoths squaring off when Stefan Struve battles Dave Herman – Struve walks into the cage having won 3 of his last 5 bouts, choking out heavy-handed kickboxer Pat Barry in his last outing.

The 6-foot-11 giant has had an on-off record in his career winning some and losing some but he is looking to get on track tonight with another victory but it isn’t coming easy against Dave Herman.

Herman walks into the cage sporting a three-fight win streak with his last victory coming over John Olav-Einemo as well as holding notable wins over Don Frye, Kerry Schall & Ron Waterman on his trek to the elite heavyweight division.

Action-packed, smash-mouth brawls were what the UFC wanted from these two and it’s what they got, but not right away – Herman chipped away at the giant trying to take away his legs with a series of leg kicks that caught him off guard.

Herman was unable to find his range and took punishment to his legs while landing occasionally with his large-frame that was largely nullified by the leg kicks of Herman.

The fight came to a close when Herman used his leg kick to set up an uppercut that almost knocked the beard off of Herman before “The Skyscraper” pounced on him landing a string of unanswered punches to Herman who didn’t defend it.

UFC on Fuel TV 1: Markes sneaks past Simpson in controversial decision

Tags: , , , ,

Two middleweight hopefuls looked to move up the UFC ladder tonight as Aaron Simpson fought Ronny Markes — Simpson has been in the UFC since 2009 only losing to elite middleweights in Chris Leben & Mark Munoz.

Markes got the opportunity to fight in the UFC following a victory over former WEC middleweight champ Paulo Filho and took a fight at light-heavyweight in his octagon debut beating Karlos Vemola.

Markes opened early pressuring “A-Train” with his wild, unorthodox striking but one strong right hand changed the entire fight with Simpson getting him on wobbly legs in the dying stages of the first frame.

The final two frames were highly-competitive with both combatants putting in work between the clinch, striking exchanges and mat battles with both trying to put the other away for the entire fight.

The Brazilians striking was probably what gave him the upper hand, in the last round when Simpson tired he kept up his pace and was landing effective over and over again.

UFC on Fuel TV 1: Dillashaw dominates Watson on points

Tags: , , , ,

TJ Dillashaw is one of the hottest prospects in the UFC, although he only has five professional bouts under his belt he has years of wrestling experience behind him and training alongside his friend, mentor and training partner Urijah Faber.

Dillashaw first got mainstream recognition as a member of The Ultimate Fighter where he would dispatch of three opponents en route to making the finals of the series, losing to John Dodson.

Walel Watson has risen to the UFC fighting around the regional circuit against some tough customers in Cody Gibson and Ismael Leon before getting his chance at the big-time completely smashing fellow prospect Joseph Sandoval in his octagon debut before losing a closely contested split-decision to Yves Jabuoin.

These talented featherweights squared off in a one-sided affair with the Team Alpha Male member putting a beating on the fellow prospect – Dillashaw showed decent striking to open up proceedings but he wasn’t there to put on a kick boxing clinic he quickly took him off his feet.

Dillashaw dominated the opening ten minutes slamming Jabuoin to the mat with thunderous takedowns and raining down punch after punch landing 172 strikes over all to the 12 landed by Watson.

All his hard work nearly got away from him in the final frame when he was showing clear signs of fatigue and Watson nearly put him away with his submission attempts but he was able to survive and finished strong in top-position.

Dillashaw got his hand raised winning every round, scoring two 30-25 cards.

UFC on Fuel TV 1: Sakuraba influences Menjivar to comeback & submit Albert

Tags: , , , , ,

A six-pack of fights kicked off tonight on Fuel TV with a clash between two talented bantamweight talents – Ivan Menjivar has been playing this game since it was still in diapers, a veteran of 32-fights he walked into the octagon following two-straight wins over Nick Pace & Charlie Valencia since his UFC return.

John Albert first raised eyebrows as a cast-member of the 14th installment of The Ultimate Fighter – He walked onto the show with a 6-1 record after recently suffering his first defeat.

Although he was eliminated from the series early by eventual winner and flyweight hopeful John Dodson he earned his way onto the UFC roster when it counted smashing the face of Team Mayhem’s Dustin Pague.

Menjivar got his hand raised when all was said and done but it didn’t come without a fight – In one of the most action-packed rounds I’ve witnessed in a long time the fight hit the floor early with Albert showing off some slick grappling skills having the Canadian in danger early with a heel hook as well as hammering him with several unanswered strikes.

But before you knew it Menjivar took control of the fight, took the back of his opponent and secured a rear-naked-choke that was set up by some hard-shots to move to 3-1 in the UFC.

Post-fight Menjivar revealed that he thought about MMA pioneer and Japanese sensation Kazushi Sakuraba when he was getting beaten by the rookie which inspired him to come back.

Brock Lesnar: Is He WWE Bound?

Tags: , , ,

By Justin Faux

Last night amidst one of the busiest weekend’s combat sports has seen all year Brock Lesnar is the hot topic of discussion.

It was billed as the biggest heavyweight fight in UFC history when the NCAA Division I champion met the K-1 kickboxing champion in a throw-back to the early days of the promotions history with a traditional striker vs. grappler showdown.

There were millions of questions circling both men and it didn’t take long for them to be answered – Despite suffering a cut early above his eye “The Demolition Man” relentlessly stalked Lesnar who only reverted back to his bread-n-butter  wrestling game on one occasion with a takedown attempt that was easily stuffed.

As we were about to reach the half-way point of the first of five potential rounds Overeem connected with three shots to the liver with the final one dropping Lesnar who was swarmed on with strikes.

The former WWE Champion announced his intentions to walk-away from the sport in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.

“I’ve had a really difficult couple years with my disease,” Lesnar said after the fight. “And I’m officially going to say this is the last time you’ll see me in the octagon.”

Brock added that he had promised his wife, Sable of WWE stardom and his child that if he won this fight he would get a title shot and that would be his last fight. But if he lost, as he did, he would retire.

It’s been a busy few years for the Webster, South Dakoda native beginning his career in 2007 Lesnar did in eight professional bouts more than what most could do in eighty.

In 2008 with only one octagon victory under his belt Lesnar dominated two-division champion and first ballot Hall-of-Famer Randy Couture en route to winning his first UFC title which he would go on to defend twice.

In 2009 he had his first flare with the severe intestinal aliment diverticulitis during a hunting trip in Canada and after spending 11 days in hospital the imposing giant had lost 40 pounds and was recommended to have surgery to remove his colon.

This year he would once again be troubled by diverticulitis which would force him to cancel his UFC 131 bout with rival coach Junior Dos Santos on the thirteenth season of Spike TV’s hit reality series The Ultimate Fighter.

Now with a 5-3 professional record and for the first time in his career suffering back-to-back defeats Lesnar hangs up his gloves.

Literally seconds later the key-words “Brock Lesnar” and “WWE” were trending worldwide so you can guess what people were talking about.

Following winning the NCAA Division I Championship for the University of Minnesota he chose a career in professional wrestling over going to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia for one simple reason – Money.

Over his four-year career with the WWE he made plenty of it taking the wrestling word by storm and achieving almost everything that there was to do.

Conspiracy theorists have been hard at work since last night proceedings with wet dreams about Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania 28.

Will the former champ return home to the WWE after nearly an eight-year hiatus? Yes, but not right now.

Firstly, Lesnar will not return to the WWE on a full-time schedule unless it was for the most ridiculous amounts of cash. Lesnar speaks in his autobiography about the toll that a 300+ day schedule in the WWE can take on your body which forced him to an addiction to Vicodin and Vodka and at 34-years-of-age I don’t know if that’s something he really wants to do again. Secondly, returning in time for WrestleMania in April of 2012 wouldn’t make as much of an impact as it would have in years prior because the Main Event for this year’s super-show is The Rock vs. John Cena. I would be shocked if Brock Lesnar never made a big return to the WWE for a few big-time paydays at their big events.

Brock Lesnar has tried his hand at a lot of things in life between MMA, a try-out with the Minnesota Vikings that came up empty and an amateur wrestling career but he found the most success being a part of the WWE roster.

Weekend MMA Recap: War Machine Defeats Huerta, Bellator 59 Tourney Finals and Zaromskis Somersaults

Tags: , , , , , , ,

- Jon Koppenhaver who is now known as War Machine defeated Roger Huerta in the main event of Ultimate Warrior Fighting 1 in Pharr, Texas. War Machine who is making his return to the cage following a one year stint at the George Bailey Detention Facility after being convicted of felony assault, defeated Huerta by TKO late in the third round.

Lmao! Guess I cant do shit right. Im not going anywhere bitches so get use to my face. Gonna keep rackin up W’s just to spite you all. – via War Machine’s Twitter

- Live on the Jersey strip at Caesars Atlantic City, Bellator 59 went down. It was one hell of a card, which featured the Bantamweight and Heavyweight Tournament finals. The first tournament bout was the bantamweight matchup where Eduardo Dantas defeated Alexis Vila by Unanimous Decision to earn the right to fight the current champ Zach Makovsky. Unfortunately the main event of the evening was ruled a no contest after Thiago Santos hit Eric Prindle with an accidental groin strike in round 1. The highlight of the night, well maybe not such a highlight, but following Kurt Pellegrino’s loss at the hands of Patricky Pitbull he announced his retirement to his hometown crowd.

This isn’t the way I wanted it to end. You know, walking up the stairs I wanted to honestly tell you that you guys would never ever ever see me fight again unless you’re watching old tapes. It’s just getting a little hard. I missed my daughter’s first words, which were ‘dad,’ preparing for this fight. I don’t know what I want to do, but as of right now I’m done. I think I’m done… I don’t know what to do. I wanted to retire today.

-  In the main event of Saturday’s KSW 17 event in Poland, Polish strongman Mariusz Pudzianowski defeated James Thompson by Unanimous Decision victory. The decision was highly controversial Thompson clearly won the first round, so it should have gone to an overtime round. Check the video below to see how upset Thompson was…

- Finally at Rumble of the Kings 2011, Marius Zaromskis used a highlight-reel somersault head kick to knock Bruno Carvalho to the mat where he finished him with some serious ground and pound.
