Former WEC Champ Jamie Varner Signs Multi-Fight Deal with the XFC

Tags: , ,

Xtreme Fighting Championships (XFC), the Southeast’s largest Mixed Martial Arts promotion is proud to announce the signing of Jamie Varner. The former WEC lightweight champion has signed a new, multi-fight agreement with the promotion and will make his next appearance at XFC 16:High Stakes, live on HDNet on Feb. 10th at the Civic Coliseum in Knoxville, TN .

Universally recognized as one of the top lightweights in the world, Varner (18-6-1) is not only a dynamic striker, but has slick submission skills as well. Varner has built a reputation for finishing fights throughout his career. In 18 victories, ‘C-4′ has finished 12 opponents in the first round. Only two of his wins came from the judge’s scorecards.

Varner made a statement in his debut at XFC 14 with a convincing win over up-and-coming prospect Nate Jolly. It only took 69 seconds for Varner to end Jolly’s night, as he rained down vicious ground and pound, to show the world that he was still a force to be reckoned with in the lightweight division.

Now, with his new XFC contract in his back pocket, Varner is thrilled to be part of the XFC’s official roster. “Honestly I’ve never been treated as good or felt as appreciated as when I fought for the XFC in October,” said Varner. “I am very thankful that they giving me another opportunity. Mr. Prisco and the XFC made me want to fight again!”

And John Prisco, the President of the XFC, is thrilled to have Varner under contract. “This is a big acquisition for the XFC,” explained Prisco. “Jamie Varner is one of the best 155ers in the world and I’m thrilled to have him in our lightweight division. I know he is going to give us some spectacular fights, just like he did at XFC 14. We are still working on the opponent, but Jamie will make his next appearance for us at ‘High Stakes’ in February.”

The UFC announced days ago that Demetrious Johnson would move to the flyweight division and fight in the inaugural UFC flyweight tournament in March. This would mean that Johnson’s opponent Eddie Wineland would be without an opponent for their fight at UFC on Fox 2. Look no further, former Ultimate Fighter contestant Johnny Bedford has stepped in and taken the challenge. Bedford announced the matchup via his  Twitter account.

“It’s official! I am fighting ex WEC champ Eddie Wineland at UFC on Fox in Chicago on Jan 28.”

Bedford is coming off of a one sided victory over TUF 14 housemate  Louis Gaudinot at the finale earlier this month. He will look to make it two in a row in the octagon.

Wineland is on the other end of the stick, with two losses in a row. He has lost two consecutive decisions to Joseph Benavidez and Urijah Faber in the UFC. Wineland was a former WEC champion.

UFC on Fox 2 is set to take place on Jan. 28 at Chicago’s United Center and will feature Phil Davis vs. Rashad Evans in the main event.
